Fren, give yourself permission to write crappy ish, okay?

  • If you’re going to sit around and wait for the perfect storyline and characters to come oozing out of you to make the Essence/Amazon bestseller list, then you’ve got another thing coming. Just write, no matter how BAD it is because you’re going to edit it anyway. Bullet point goes here

2 —

Fren, use your favorite author as your muse

  • Do you remember the first book you read that made you say oh hell yeah I can WRITE this. I felt that the moment I read a Farrah Rochon book. Her novels are amazing. The way she creates her characters is dope. They seem like true down to earth people. People you may know, and they face real types of situations when it comes to love. So when you feel unmotivated and stuck, turn to your favorite author to reignite that writing spark and get to writing.

3 —

Fren, take 21 days to form a creative writing habit

  • Friend, people make time for what they feel is important. If writing is important to you, then you have to add it into your daily routine until you feel weird if you don’t write. If you decide to dedicate 30 minutes before bed to writing, then damn it it’s up to YOU to make it happen. Once you get into a habit of doing this, writer’s block will be a distant memory. Make sure you’re consistent with the days and times. Give it about 3 weeks and you will really start to see progress.

Fren, try a writing prompt

  • When in doubt, fren, let it go, and write it out. Just write. Who cares about grammar, or complete sentences. It doesn’t matter. Just get to a space, turn on some music and take about 30 minutes and get your thoughts out. Just do it. When the timer goes off you’ll totally forget you were dealing with a stretch of writer’s block.

Fren, listen to music

  • Fren, grab your phone, open your iTunes and create a playlist of your favorite songs. Doing this and listening to your playlist will definitely inspire a mood and a vibe and will allow the creative juices to flow. Think about it. Let’s say you’re writing a romantic love scene but you can’t get your characters in the mood because you haven’t set a vibe to GET you going.

  • Fren, have you ever tried to read any of your work out loud? If not you need to start. This is a great editing tool. The next time you’re working on your novel, write a couple of paragraphs then test out the read aloud function in Word. It’s a true game changer. What you think you’ve written in your head may sound great, but once you use the read aloud function, you’ll have a better handle on how your work sounds. Also, get a good good gurl fren to read an excerpt of your work.

Fren, participate in a writing jag

  • Fren, have you ever tried done a writing jag? A writing jag is when you set a timer for any allotted period of time and do what you do. Once the timer goes off, you go to your work and read what you’ve written. This method is very effective and could help you propel your characters and plot forward.
